Buying a Lake Home in Kansas City

It’s no secret that Kansas Citians love the lake life, especially in the summer. Fortunately for us, the spectacular Lake of the Ozarks is just a few short hours away. But what about Kansas City residents who long to live like they’re on vacation ALL year long? Or who desire to get to the lake in just an hour or less of drive time after work on a Friday? Just this week, we helped two clients close on homes in Lake Winnebago and Lake Lotawana so we’d love to share more with you about what drew them to those lakes and a little bit about other options in the Kansas City metro!

Featuring 480 acres of surface water and 27 miles of shoreline, Lake Lotawana has become an incredibly popular option for Kansas Citians in recent years. The Lake boasts that it’s the only one within 30 minutes of Kansas City that hosts sailing regattas but also allows speed boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, tubing… you name it! This is a coveted lake community, especially for part-timers who want a quick drive to the lake on Fridays and quick ride home on Sunday nights. The Marina 27 restaurant is a huge favorite, offering some of the best food in the area with gorgeous, scenic lake views. Prospective Buyers should note that there is a first right of refusal in place at Lake Lotawana meaning that before a home can sell, the immediate neighbors have to first decline to purchase it. All in all, Lake Lotwana lakefront living is synonymous with luxury and purchasing a home here is always an exciting opportunity!

Originally established in 1920’s as a vacation spot from the hustle and bustle of Kansas City, Lake Quivira is located in the west side of the metro near the rolling hills of Shawnee. Today it’s lauded for its incredible residential amenities and diverse architecture of homes. As you can see by the data, it’s not always easy to snag a home here, as the turnover is usually quite low. The lake is hugged by about 400 homes and features a golf course, country club and vibrant social scene. The HOA is extremely active and committed to protecting the character and history of Lake Quivira. Prospective buyers should note that while most of the homes are in Johnson County, feeding into Shawnee Mission Schools, there are a few homes that are in Wyandotte County, which feeds into Turner Schools. We love driving out here as it is a true oasis in the middle of the city!
